More zBrush fun. I'm happy with the big, general shapes. I just started putting some of the detail in. I'll get around to finishing it someday ... I hope.
I've abandoned Mudbox. It has a lot of potential. I think it will become a stronger player in the next few years. But it's not there yet. So I decided to learn zBrush. There's a much steeper learning curve in zBrush but it's worth learning. It's very powerful and a lot of fun. Click the images to see a much larger image.
This is a coach character I came up with. I started this character because I think fat, old guys look funny in baseball uniforms. I looked to the old Dodgers manager, Tommy Lasorda, and former BYU coach, Levell Edwards, for inspiration.
I finished the model awhile ago and recently finished the rig. I wanted to test out the facial rig before I went any further with him. I only animated the mouth to see if I could get a good range of mouth shapes/expressions.
The audio clip is from the movie, Bull Durham. Haven't seen the movie but I thought the audio clip was funny.
I've continued to try to learn as much as I can about lighting techniques and about Mental Ray. It's been awhile since I've had time to do so. I did everything you see in this piece. This will be the closest I ever come to owning one of these beauties.
The lighting and rendering were done in Maya using Mental Ray. I did not use Final Gather or Global Illumination this time around.
This started out as a modeling project that I could do on the side. No deadlines. Just something I could work on when I needed a break from the norm. I never planned on texturing and lighting it. That changed when I started dabbling with Mental Ray. Once I saw what Mental Ray could do I decided I had to make an attempt.

I did this quick test in Mudbox a few months back. I spent about a day and half on it. Unfortunately I was unable to finish because I no longer had access to the software. I had fun seeing what Mudbox could do though. Very cool software. And artist friendly.
